The Real Maciver

Happy Paul

Wee bit gutted as Id hoped to get some of Paul John Macivers songs up on here for you to listen to but WordPress.com are stuck in 2005 or something and don’t support Reverbnation widgets – wank I know but that’s the deal !!  Thats where the songs are so we be fucked.   You’ll have to make do with a couple of shots from Paul and I’s wee wander about town today and a link to the tunes. The tunes are wonderful.  Ive been bitching on recently about there being too many acoustic singer/songwriters kicking about these days – I get bored easily.  Pauls songs have reminded me what its like when this stuff is done really, really well.

PAUL JOHN MACIVER ON REVERBNATION

Now based in the large urban settlement known as Glasgow he will be home for Xmas and you can catch the Parmaviolet live at Hootananny on Boxing Day which this year falls on 26th December – who knew eh.  Go and show him some support or be like me and go and do a late shift at work.  Go and have a pint – you’ll be gagging for one after all that turkey and fucking about with lego and pointless mini ipads or looking for a decent film to snooze to……….

Plan for the next shoot is to fill Falcon Square with line dancers and do a alt.country gangnam style thaaaaaaaaaaang yeeeehaaaaaw etc – no really !!

Belladrum 2012: Fall About Friday”

Ok so I’ve done it again.  I’ve left it too long.  Life got in the way of the baaalogging – I make no apologies.  Shit happens.  I had high hopes and aspirations for the Belladrum blog this year.  It was to be a sprawling, epic, romantic affair laden with skullduggery, hornswaggling and  swashbuckling.  Alas, this may not now be is not maybe perhaps !!  It was nearly two weeks ago now and between then and now I’ve had a couple thousand photos to sort out, work and family life to be getting along with and a wedding shoot to finish.  It’s not all sitting about on the yacht you know barking orders at my ghost writers and cocktail makers !!

So plan is – TRY TO REMEMBER MOST OF IT IN SOME KIND OF ORDER AND FILL IN GAPS WITH PHOTOS.  Right then – off we go !!

My Friday all began with a great meeting of minds and livers !!  I was finally given the opportunity to meet the legend that is Des ‘Des’ Irvine, partner to our favourite radiowifie Ms Marion ‘Marion’ Scott !!  More on Des as this ‘article’ unfolds…….   Cadging a lift down Bella way with the MFR team was a hoot – fine folk and they didn’t seem to mind my foul sweary mouth ( too much ).  Marion used her charms to gain entry through the back door (ooer) and we drove more or less into the press enclosure.  Perfect.  AND EVEN BETTER – THE SUN WAS OUT – not just out either – twas beating doon !!  This was looking like a top Belladrum weekend.  Feel free to click on some of the photos – they will take you to wonderful, far off places……..sort of…….

Before I could get into all that photographing-the-bands malarky I had to do the photographing-a-wedding malarky.  Quick sprint over to the Rockhopper to say hi to the lovely Jenny, Steve, Jack and Dave the ‘security guy’, chuck a half decent shirt on and make rude gestures at the Netsounds and goNORTH teams.  Very quickly popped my head into the Rockhopper Oven to say hi to Bwani Junction who were about to record and I shot off to be a sensible wedding photographer at Belladrum Temple.  Amazing place – if you don’t know what it is take a look HERE.  Magical place to get hitched !!  So that was the first couple of hours of my Tartan Heart Festival taken care of.  Very stressful but at the same time great fun.  Congratulations to Claire and Ali !!

I had to miss James Mackenzie on the main stage with his new band (featuring Blazing Fiddling legend Mr Bruce Macgregor) and Gerry Jablonski on the Grassroots due to the wedding shoot.  A good cause.  I found out earlier this week that the bride managed to sneak in a couple of Gerry tunes while we awaited her arrival at the temple.  At least she was fashionably late for good reason.  Nice one Claire.

So as Gordon ‘is a moron’ Ramsay would say……Wedding.  Done !!  Time for a tinny so off to the Rockhopper once more to don the summer festival garb of shorts and Bronto tee and see what delights Netsounds had in their arsenal of alcohol.  Cider ?  Dont mind if I do.  Now I can get on with the serious business of Belladrumming !!

Quick hello to Fatherson in the Rockhopper which by now was basically cooking any bands who entered it.  I managed a HIYA, 2 photos and a sharp exit.  Sessions will be on the goNORTH youtube and well worth a look though.  Rockhopper has firmly become on of my favourite things over the course of this past year.

The lounge bar over at The Rockhopper

Late afternoon Friday and a couple of hours were spent in the company of Lance Corporal Irvine of the 1st Inverness Des Battalion.  Great fun and nobody got hurt.  Well no-one in front of us – there may have been a few unintentional disturbances in our wake.  Our intention was to go see Megan in the Seedlings tent which, miraculously, we did thankfully as she delivered a ‘confident’, ‘mature’ etc etc yawn insert rock journo cliché here, set.  This lowly blogger has but this to say – she was bloody good. We also got involved in some extreme nu-rave child throwing in Mothers Ruin and SciFi reading teenager baiting over by the main bar.  All this and it wasnt even teatime yet !  There may yet be a separate photo post on these manoeuvres

Megan takes on the bright, whiteness of The Seedlings tent

Ms Blyth

We are Scientists they claimed.  A likely story – I caught them later playing instruments on the Garden Stage masquerading as popstars.  Quite good they were too in a punky/preppy/we-have-razorlights-old-drummer kinda style.  Now round about the same time they were kicking about in the press enclosure the guys I recommended you see from doon Sooth, This Silent Forest, were doing a wee acoustic shout for Marion.  Slapped wrists for me as this was the only time I saw them play although our paths crossed much much later that day……….  Galipaygos followed them into Marions den of musiquity (wtf?) accompanied by Claire/Abagail on fiddle.  Marion also had cider !  Win !  Incidentally all of the sessions can be heard on Marions Moray Firth Radio show – 8pm Sunday nights !!  GET INTAE IT !!

Graeme Le Squirrel of This Silent Forest gives it his all in the afternoon

The rest of This Silent Forest giving it their all later that day in among them pesky kids up Da Muvvahs Ruin bit, innit

I’ve had some really nice emails from Ty Taylor of Vintage Trouble regarding my shots of them at last years festival – claims his mum loves one of them.  Cool – no offer to buy it though.  Bet he’s done a right-clicker and his mum has the photo framed on her living room wall beside the 3 ducks.  Shame its got a huge fuck-off houdidontblog watermark along it eh.  hehehehe.  Better go take photos of them this year again though as they’re expected to be one of the highlights………

Got a bit of a shock with Mr Taylor – not the entrance through the crowd which I guess was kinda cool in an “Already Done to Death by the Cuban Bros” kinda way but when he climbed the actual barrier into the  pit right in front of me a small boy – maybe 8 or 9 – reached out his hand to touch Ty Taylor as he passed and had his wee hand swiped away quite forcefully accompanied by a look that would sour milk and a scream of “NO !!!!!!“.  Now I get that you may be psyched up for the gig and hyper aware but if that’s the case don’t come through the crowd and expect to not be touched.  Poor kid looked gutted and quite shocked as was I – fuck I almost smacked the guy myself – bloody shame !!  They went onto play a great set yada yada blah blah etc but it had already been soured for me with that wee incident.   I did bump into Ty later in the day but didn’t ask him about it – epic fail – wish I had.  Nice guy for all that which made it even more disappointing !!  Did anyone else see it happen ??

STOP…………….

…………CARRY ON !!

Next up was my first RUNAWAY RUNAWAY moment of Belladrum.  Yes it was time for the worst kept secret.  The special secret guest was to be Kassidy.  Underwhelmed to the fucking hilt I can tell you.  I’m not going to bitch on about it cos those that know me will be aware of my feelings here.  Like Mumford and Sons I just DO NOT GET Kassidy or rather the furore that surrounds them.  I kinda feel with Kassidy that it’s not the music that has the women drooling over them cos I’ve heard many, many bands do what Kassidy do so much better than Kassidy.  Needless to say I had better things to do than piss around photographing Kassidy.  I file them in the Dangleberry box marked AVOID.  Hey, as always, if you’re a Kassidy or Dangler fan then each to their own and I’m glad you enjoyed them – they’re not for me.  OTHER OPINIONS ARE ALWAYS AVAILABLE ELSEWHERE……..

Heres what you could have been doing when Kassidy were on…….

We Are Scientists and rather nice blokes too

LATER THAT SAME DAY (the trolley may not have as many wheels as it started with…….)

“Jamie, hey Jamie”, I shouted through mouthfuls of Netsounds Kopperberg cider stuff.  ”Hey min are we going to see Rachel, where s Rachel on at…….?”  Now I stupidly trusted someone who’d had about the same amount of cider to dull the ability to read a list of stages and artists as me.  ”Henhouse” he shouts – “Hothouse” I correct – “Aye !! ” And away we go.  At least I thought it was ‘we’ till I got to the Hothouse the nick of time.  No signs of Jamie as I entered the photography pit just as the band were taking the stage to loud cheering.  Brilliant !!  Front and centre for some nice shots of our local heroine Rachel Sermanni……I look up…..camera poised…….who the fuck is this guy ?????  It’s not Rachel unless she’s morphed into a 60 odd year old punk !!  Faaaaaaaaaaack sake !! Its Eddie and the Hotrods !!  Rachel was playing a blinder up in the Grassroots Tent.  Bastard !!  Oh well !!

Not Rachel Sermanni

This gentleman did anything he wanted to……..

Tell ye what though – from what I saw of Eddie & the Hotrods they’ve still got it.  Full of attitude and energy – not bad for an old bugger (I’m no spring chicken mesel mind).  Shouldve probably hung around down that neck of the woods as The Buzzcocks were due to finish the day off at the Hothouse.  I wanted to see them but loyalties come first and the Team that is known as Kapowski were headlining the Seedlings tent.  Thats a must !!  I don’t do Wombats – I don’t have the jeans or youth on my side.

Caught the tail end of The Stagger Rats on arrival but sadly remember very little of them.  Damn you Strongbow !!  The main memory of the last of The Seedlings tent was the sudden refusal to enter the photography pit.  Now Id been in it earlier in the day during Megans set but noticed no-one else had ventured.  On further investigation I was informed that it was something to do with spotlights on monitors in the front and was a Health & Safety issue.  A real shame – made me work a lot harder but in the end I gave up so I’m not entirely happy with my Seedlings shots from 2012.  Bummer because not many snappers venture up to that tent as the big guns have no interest in the upcoming bands – that’s where guys like me come in.  Unfortunately the lack of access carried on through the Saturday too and the worst bit was I’ve yet to see those lights being used.  Oh well.  Thanks to Jonny Fordie for my Stanley Odd access on the Saturday – more of that next post !!

Stagger Rats

Team Kapowski went down an absolute storm !!  I’m a sucker for their quirky, poppy, hip-hop, kitschy, quirky, hip hop pop (pardon the technical music jargon).  Blair Stewart was born to do this !!  If I’m honest I wasnt sure how they’d go down headlining this tent but they had no worries in that dept.  Tent stowed oooooot.  Place Jumpeeeeen !!

End of the Day

I have many post-music photos from around Mothers Ruin and the very entertaining wait for a taxi – those will stay offline for the time being (that huge sigh you’ve just heard is Marion Scotts one of relief)

BELLADRUM.  FRIDAY.   DONE    (houdi, Marion, Des, Jamie, Murray and many many more……….DONE)

PHOTO SETS FROM BELLADRUM CAN BE FOUND OVER HERE AT THE FAECESBOOK PAGE

Finally after all is said, done, dusted, at the end of the day, finally, as it goes, etc etc we here at dontblog towers have to say a massive thanks to Dougie and his team at Belladrum, the Netsounds and Rockhopper guys, many of the bands for letting me point digital things at them when they’re trying to make quiet acoustic music and of course Marion and her crew for allowing me to hang about and hit them for cider and photoshoots !!  You are all legends.  Sober Saturday next  !!

Interesting people I met on my wanders……….

Roadway didnt scare any children, only me

A much calmer Mr Taylor later that same evening

In My Humble Opinion………….

…….and remember its only an opinion…….others are available.

Basically Mr M aka Still Burning of our East Coast brithers ower in Eberdeen, Flares n Seagulls suggested we both do a top ten for Bella type thang to compare who we’d be looking to see during the Tartan Heart Festival this coming weekend.  I’m shite at making up top tens, fives, twenties and fifties but I have given it a go and managed 6 right out of the blocks without looking at the lineup which means I’ll look at the lineup now and see another 40 acts that Id like to see or recommend that you see.  I shall keep it to the requested “10 to watch at Bella”

Now as always this is only an excuse to post my gig photos or shout about mates bands – don’t expect massive amounts of helpful information regarding stage times and what they’re having for lunch before the gig or any of that shennanigans.  Thats what the lanyards and programs are for on the day………ALSO TRY HERE

Go and take a look at Still Burnings 10  while you’re here eh (it’s actually 6 – he’s owe me 4)

So here you go – no agenda, no particular order, no rhyme nor reason………………….no real study of the lineup to be honest so this will of course be a plug for a few of my ‘special’ boys from the local musical fraternity !

GERRY JABLONSKI & THE ELECTRIC BAND – also on SB’s list but I can’t NOT have my old mate Gerry on here.  If you havent been Jablonskied yet get yerself along to the Grass Roots stage on Friday 3rd for some rip-roaring electric blues.  Went down a storm last year on the Potting Shed Stage.

Gerry and harp-player, Peter Narojczyk

ROADWAY – local fellas looking to take Classic RAWK to the goNORTH Seedlings stage on Saturday night.  Fresh from a summer spent fighting with shattered legs and comas – I shit you not – these guys have been looking for this Bella gig since their inception so expect some serious rock n roll.  I for one will finally be popping my ROADWAY cherry.  I will still make them sleep on the wet patch though !!  This will be a good one !!

STANLEY ODD – Scottish Hip-hop at its absolute finest.  Theres a huge crop of new hip-hop creeping up from the central belt right now – Profisee, Madhat McGore etc but the Odd Squad are still doing it for me.  All the right beats and all the right grooves finished off with vocals and words from Paula and Dave aka Veronika and Solareye !!  Mon the fucking Odd Squad.  The more I shout about them and the more I photograph them the more  chance I have of finally scamming a couple of t-shirts off them eh……..surely……eh………??  Stanley Odd – goNORTH Seedlings on Saturday night – clothes optional but duncing shoes a must !!

THIS SILENT FOREST - I love new Scottish music and I’m really looking forward to seeing these people play live having missed them at goNORTHs two-day event up here in Inverness in June.  I have had many a happy tweet with Squirrel (no word of G-Man, the Twenty Four Hour Party People with the  Plastic Face who Carnt Smile or whether or not there was a white out but he seems like a nice enough chap who thinks highly of family values and always chews his food).  Another Seedlings stager for Friday.  Looking forward to meeting Graeme and the band.  Have a wee video………………

THE WHISKY RIVER BAND – they’ve been very apparent in recent blog posts and I make no apologies.  These good-looking, virile young mofos are right at the top of their game right now and will be one of Saturdays highlights in Black Isle Brewerys Grassroots Stage.

Whiskys on last year Seedlings stage

My other favourites from the local crop are the mighty goddamned Little Mill of Happiness.  The six piece will fit nicely on the Hothouse Stage and Steve Obern will undoubtedly enjoy growling loudly that close to the campsite.  This will be a marked difference to my last outing with them at Hush Inverness where they were crammed into a nightclub type bar for goNORTH.  Really looking forward to this one.  Strangely I didn’t pay much attention to the Hothouse last year but I have a feeling I’ll get myself down there more often this time around.

Big headliner type one and my guilty pleasure will probably have to be Travis.  they’ve grown on me over the years and I quite fancy them for this Bella.  That may change on the day – there’s just so much on but compared to last years bland Texas and Deacon Blues, Travis have a bit of credibility with me.  I think they’ll be perfect for the Garden Stage this weekend!

Ok Still Burning – that’s seven – there’s just too much to choose from so I’m going to stop before I either offend someone or get annoyed at myself.  No real surprises there for anyone who knows me but as always, I make no apology.  Im like that you know – like the Fonz

Oh fuck – hang on – there’s one other band Im screaming to see this weekend.  The Oxides !!  Yeaaaaaaaaah !!  What ?  They didn’t get the gig – WTF ?  A travesty !  Gutted – next year boys.  Next year !!

Now there are a multitude of ‘also-rans’ – remember I’m useless at top tens.  Belladrum is the perfect environment to discover new music.  New music you maybe otherwise wouldn’t think about listening to.  Theres busking going on.  There are stages you don’t even know exist.  YOU MUST VISIT ROB ELLENS POTTING SHED STAGE AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE OVER THE WEEKEND.  In fact if your camping Thursday night get over there and say hello as their weekend starts then with some tasty jamming and blues stuff going. Hit the Walled Garden and visit the HEN Stage too for some more under-the-radar music.

Theres a wealth of local talent from the Highlands on display this year – stuff from every genre.   Id love to shout about them all but I just don’t have the time this week.  Have a look around the blog – there should be bits and pieces about most in here somewhere.  As always Netsounds have some pretty amazing posts containing stuff to see at Bella this year so go check them out too.  They had a cracking wee carnival going on over at their site in the trees with all sorts going off at the Rockhopper Studio – also well worth a visit.  Remember the above list is what I’M doing this weekend – you do whatever the hell you like cos you will enjoy it.

This is the perfect festival and undoubtedly the best Scotland has to offer in both festival type goodies and music for your delectation !!

WE HERE AT THE NON-BLOG HAVE TO WISH CLAIRE AND ALI ALL THE BEST FOR THEIR NUPTIALS (thats a wedding to you of the filthy minds) AT THE TEMPLE ON FRIDAY LUNCHTIME.  LETS HOPE IT ALL GOES SMOOTHLY AND THE PHOTOGRAPHER ISNT TOO MUCH OF A FANNY

TARTAN FUCKING HEART !!  YAAAAAAAAS !!

(other festivals are available but theyre nae half as good…..)

Ooooooh and heres a wee one slipping under the wire at the last minute………..

Seriously ?? Another Bella announcement………

Right !!  Im truly fucking knackered and my heeds bursting with trying to be inventive and witty and whatever else Im supposed to be (oh thats the one – excited !!) about yet another Belladrum announcement.  If Id known there’d be this many Id have saved them all up and done a big one about the end of July.   Dont get me wrong – everything theyve announced has added something to the whole Bella setup and it all makes for an even more magical weekend at the best festival youll ever visit buuuuuuuut  Ive just kinda let myself get dragged into the whole lineup announcing situation and it appears to be never ending.  Is it like this every year ?   Im gonna go with the flow on this one seeing as theres another local act made the cut.  I was under the impression theyd already announced they were playing but that mustve been Rockness – see its that confusing up here right now !!

One of these men used to be in The Bill

Anyhoo – enough whingeing and show some respect or else Ill no doubt find myself in trouble !!  Here are the nominees for the…..sorry….wrong post……..here are the latest additions to the Tartan Heart Festival 2012……….(spot the copy and pasting again – told you Im knackered)

Welsh alternative rock-pop bruisers The Blackout from Merthyr Tydfil join the line-up of Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival together with up-and-coming northern soul exponents The Milk, Willie Campbell & The Open Day Rotation from the Western Isles and Highland rock artists KOBI.  More about KOBI at the foot of this post – first, some photos – that is what I do here eh

KOBI for main stage

Open Day Rotation

Scots karaoke band BandeMcokie will enable a late night listeners in the Black isle Brewery Grassroots Stage to entertain their fellow audience members with band karaoke. (sorry but that just sounds awful but I could be proved wrong I suppose – the word karaoke just frightens me)  The late night slot on the same stage on the Saturday night will be filled by MacFloyd playing the whole of ‘Dark Side Of The Moon.’  They should be fielding the talents of Viv Scotson on backing vocals on the night which is something Im looking forward to.

Sunday Morning Bella style – one of my favourite photos of all Ive taken at Bella over the last few years

A Mystery Special Guest has been added to the main stage line up on the Friday evening “The identity of this artist will not be revealed until they appear on the Garden Stage at 1830 on Friday 3rd August,” said festival promoter Joe Gibbs. “But – and here’s a hint – judging by their previous receptions at Bella, they’re going to be a popular choice.”

Garden Stage Daytime

So there ya go – more stuff for Bella.  Reading back over the past lineup announcements and additions its amazing to see what these guys can pack into 2 days down at the Sunken Garden.  Bloody amazing every year – “Glastonbury in a Kilt without the Mud and Shit Music” - I said that so no nickin my taglines  :)

Garden Stage Nightime (Texas 2011)

Anyone for Tennis ??

Youre never sure at Bella

So heres a bit more on KOBI for those of you unsure as to who they are – thatll be those of you who are currently residing on the outer reaches of The Milky Way cos over the last year and a half theyve been fucking everywhere.  Prepare yourself for another sterling show of copying and pasting………..

Highland indie rock band KOBI release their debut single “Fight” on Monday 16th July just in time for the Bella mainstage appearance.  Theyd been on the scene some 8 or 9 years ago but re-emerged last summer and very quickly secured a slot on the goNORTH Seedlings Stage.  This year they return to  take on the main Garden Stage.  The 4-piece have already impressed fans by building up a strong following throughout Scotland including King Tuts in Glasgow, The Lemon Tree in Aberdeen, Ironworks in Inverness,  Brew at the Bog, Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh and a stand out appearance at Rockness opening the Clash Arena.

Keen to re-invent themselves and develop their sound theyve added 2 portions of the Bad Ass Brass of LJP fame, trumpeter Doug Hutchison and trombonist Andrew Morgan.   They hope this will produce a fresh and edgy collaboration perfect for a summer festival line up.

If further proof was needed that KOBI are not here for an exercise in nostalgia, Inverness DJ/Producers Liam Macleod and Mark Mackenzie aka Them & Us have remixed a version of their track “A New Before” which is also available from Monday 9th July.  KOBI front man Gary Thain said: “The opportunity to have one of our tracks remixed by two up and coming producers is perfect.  We are really keen to embrace fresh ideas and remain relevant and win new fans.”

GO AND CHECK OUT THE REST OF THEM & US STUFF ON SOUNDCLOUD

Ok – mostly copy and pasting.  Right – enough is enough.  I really dont envisage having to mention Belladrum again for another 3 weeks or so but you never can tell with this festivality larkiness

Im going to have a beer now.  Have a great week !!

Netsounds Do Video – Brace Yourselves…………….

What do you get if you stuff lots and lots of amazing musicians in a silver tin can over the space of two days in Inverness, add some coffee and lots of beers and let Netsounds Unsigned give it a good shake ?

This is what you get……………………………

goNORTH 2012 saw the Rockhopper change venue to Hootanannys wee ‘garden/patio’ and balcony for this years live sessions with Netsounds Unsigned.  That was the preview and these are the first batch of videos.

Murray Stands Guard while the ‘magic’ is made inside …(lies actually as at this point there is no power)

Hahahahahahabelladrumdoescomedy !!!

I like a laugh and Belladrum is usually a hive of laughter for me and everyone I know (mostly).  Well for those of you struggling to get a chuckle on or having trouble with your giggles the solution is at hand…………………….(cue copy and paste alert)

THE STAND COMEDY CLUB BRING BELLA LAUGHS TO BELLADRUM FESTIVAL

This year Bella welcomes a new comedy session on both days of the event, brought to festival-goers by Scotland’s celebrated ‘The Stand Comedy Club’ which runs comedy nights in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle.  Started by enthusiasts as a hobby, the Stand has become a runaway success, and its three comedy venues are regarded as being among the best in the world. Bella audiences will be treated to evening and late night hilarity from the Venus Flytrap stage.

We are delighted that The Stand is to curate comedy at Bella. Hold your breath and count to ten for the line-up which will be announced in a few weeks time,” said festival promoter Joe Gibbs. The festival also offers more late night comedy in the Co-operative Verb Garden tent.

Further music artists have been announced to play the festival. These include English experimental art rock band Sweet Billy Pilgrim whose album ‘ Two Born Men’ was Mercury Prize nominated in 2009;exciting Scots indie bands The Draymin and Bwani Junction and Celtic Highland heroes Torridon. And the craic-it-open ceilidh session on the Thursday night will feature Rhythm & Reel and The Rogues – the only Pogues tribute band in Achiltibuie – plus Davy Cowan.

Davy ‘Davy Davy’ Cowan

Mystery Special Guest has been added to the main stage line up on the Friday evening “The identity of this artist will not be revealed until they appear on the Garden Stage at 1830 on Friday 3rd August,” said festival promoter Joe Gibbs. “But – and here’s a hint – judging by their previous receptions at Bella, they’re going to be a popular choice.”

The festival won a VisitScotland Thistle Award in 2009 and is a past winner of the Grassroots Festival Award at the UK Festival Awards, the festival industry’s ‘oscars’.

Rockness – The Venue

………………………ok so its actually few hundred yards in front of the actual ‘venue’ itself.  I know, I know, I harp on about being a ‘music’ photography blog and these are not essentially music related but every now and again I take what I deem to be a ‘fucking cracker’ or two (thats a technical term).  These are 3 of the Loch which creates that, now, iconic backdrop for the Rockness Festival !!  Aw shite Ill throw in one of the festival too just to keep the music element in there  :-)

THIS YEARS FESTIVAL IS THE 8th, 9th and 10th JUNE.

TBA are hoping for a slot but nothing confirmed as yet…………………….

Five Guys Named Stan, collectively speaking…….

I heard a beautiful thing tonight.  I heard two beautiful, wonderful things tonight.

Tonight I had my first experience of Stanley the band fae Eberdeen – thats Aberdeen if youre from anywhere other than Eberdeenshire.  It was affa nice !

Thanks to Stanley manager Steve Amos for the promo pic

Unka Vic had them on his BBC Scotland show this fine evening – most refreshing for a Banffer (nae bomb jokes please) to hear ‘proper’ accents on the radio.  Granted theyre not all from Aberdeen – theres Ellon in there too apparently (and Dundee – oh well) but its still nice to hear one of them, Stephen Podlesny I think, talk about Sinatras It was a very good Year in a broad Toon accent !!  Mugic min !!  Now all I need is Dod Copeland and Toxic Ephex on Fred Macauly and Ill be fair trickit !!  Hats off to Vic Galloway for continuing to bring new Scottish music to the airwaves and a massive raspberry, flips of the bird, V-signs and general fuckoffery to the BBCs ‘Them in the Know’ wankers for axing Ally McCraes BBC Introducing show – that sucks.

So anyway, the loons did 3 tunes of which I only caught two – gutted I missed the first one Edit The Night – but was suitably amazed by the other two.  Join Hands is another from the debut Animals With Amazing Disguises  - isnt that just one of the best fucking album titles you ever heard !! – but the piece de resistance – thats French dontchakno – tonight was the brilliantly haunting cover version of Goldfrapps Lovely Head.  Im hoping that gets included on Peenkos downloads this week………mon Lloyd  :-) .  An interesting yet useless fact is Join Hands featured the wonderful xylosynth – I mention that only to prove that I was paying attention !!

Surprisingly Im not going to harangue you with information and details about said band – I shall merely urge you to listen to them.  Tweet them.  Facebook them.  Love them.  Stroke them when possible and generally treat yourself to some of their noises !!  Here is, however, their press-blurb – Im a demon copy/paster as you well know……

Following on from the successful release of the singles Monkeys & Friends (on London-based indie label Kittiwake Records) and Sandwiches & Tea last year, Animals with Amazing Disguises showcases an innovative, unconventional yet accessible sound driven by a wealth of musical talent and a restless creativity.

Led by the expressive and powerful voice of Stephen Podlesny, the band draws upon a broad set of diverse influences without ever losing their knack for crafting a memorable tune. From swirling fairground melodies, to lush cinematic orchestration, to foot stomping rock n’ roll, Stanley’s musical versatility and charm is ever present and leaves many of their peers sounding one-dimensional in comparison.

The album was self-recorded and self-produced by the band in their native Aberdeen, where they have been gaining plaudits on the local scene for the last two years. Radio tastemakers like Vic Galloway and Jim Gellatly have sung their praises and spun their singles, and the band have supported acts like The Bees and Marina & The Diamonds when not selling out their own headline shows or playing to large crowds at events like the Wizard Festival or industry showcase Go North.”

Hope all that makes sense – now stop farting around and go and discover some Stanley – Ive given you a tune up there and a video down here to get you started.  Enjoy

Beer & Tunes & Fish n Chips & Tea & Cakes & Beer & Tunes……..on a farm……in the Highlands !!

They said it couldnt be done………….

7344 musicians in 1278 bands across 1500 stages in the space of 12 hours or so on a Mayday Bank Holiday in 2012……………

They said it was an impossible task, a bog too far perhaps………..

…………………they were wrong – hell, I was wrong – these figures are all bollocks. Made up facts !!  The reality though, to be honest, was still pretty mental for a festival calendar debut.  The first ever Brew at the Bog up at Bogbain Farm nr Inverness actually featured approximately 123 musicians in approximately 33 bands across approximately 3 stages.  Yeah approximately – if you want exactly then you do the fucking arithmetic cos I sure as hell aint !!  Bloody loads is all I know for definite.  Start small people say……..build it up over a couple of years people say – not so with Brewbog !!  Those mavericks out the A9 went completely bonkers and booked what can only be called a stellar line up picked from the upcoming starlets of the current Scottish musical fraternity – ‘not enough’ you cry !!  We want Brewdog beer and tea n cakes too  !!  Throw in proper fish suppers and Spanish donuts and you have a purty much perfect goddamned day out on the farm y’all !!

Presenter-wise, Brewbog was having a ban on bumbling fools – no Mick Fleetwood / Sam Fox Brit Award debacles. They went straight to the top – stalwarts of Scottish based music shows Ally McCrae and Vic Galloway on main stage. Gonorth had gone one better though – they had Phillip Schofield, Jerry Sadowitz, Iggle Piggle and Tony Blackburn all rolled into one in the shape of Jamie Macdonald of netrosunds-unminged !!

Local Popcaster and Laird of the goNORTH stage, Big Jamie

So Saturday morning,  5th May arrives and I find myself hanging around Inverness street corners waiting for instructions.  Its like the days of the old skool raves.  No info till the last minute.  Suddenly Im bundled, blindfolded, into the Netsoundsmobile which seemed unneccesary at the time as we were all aware it was Bogbain Farm we were headed for.  I allowed Murray and Jamie this indulgence though as they had gone out and kitted themselves in SAS gear especially for it  !!  Screams of “DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE” were met with slaps in the gob from Mrs Netsounds, our designated driver.  It was at this point I realised that this would, no doubt, get out of hand !!

Right then – who did I see, what did I do ??   This is the bit that I have to thank my 2 trusty Nikons for having the date and time recorded in the photo files otherwise it was going to get blurry.  That data coupled with the exel file I recieved from Yvonne Murray, our esteemed festival director,  last week detailing stages and times mean I can pretty much peice together my day at Bogbain.  Kinda……..nearly !  I even found myself having to ask people in the Artist Area who they were – sorry Seventeenth Century  ;(  .  I try to keep up with all these new fangled bands by listening to Ally and Vic on the wireless and Netsounds poppycastings but hearing and knowing what the hell they look like are two different skills.  Then you get Fatherson and Endor who appear to share singer/guitarists – they dont though but an easy mistake for an old, half cut codger to make.  I also accosted Kitty the Lion drummer, Nick Roan, convinced that he was either someone I knew from school, a photographer I knew from Aberdeen or, or, well I couldnt work it out but then realised that his face was stuck in my head due to looking at photos of him all week for a flyer I was asked to supply for.  Much hilarity ensued – it didnt really. Wasnt that funny but you know how you get with the beers in !!  Guess you had to be there – Id advise it next year  :)

The ‘Wig or Natural’ debate raged on well into the next 10 minutes

He Slept on 57 open the goNORTH stage

The Seventeenth Centurys Mark Brendan Farmer

Dundee’s Lost City Soul kicked off the main stage activity on the day but I was more interested in Jamies first announcement and the local act that was the subject of said announcement – He Slept On 57.  Really, really taking to these guys a lot since the Ironworks Winter Showcase last year.  No-apologies, no messing, powerpop at its best.  Happy music as I like to call it.  Why ?  Cos it makes me happy – duuuuh !! Jamie also mangaged to announce them without issue, stutter or mispronunciation (or research, script or taking his scarf off).  The aforementioned The Seventeenth Century were next up on the main stage – watched a couple of songs and was impressed by their passion – Vic Galloway is certainly a fan judging by his enthusiasm when introducing them.

Local lass Megan wows The Bothy

Hopefully now being played in New Zealand – cheers Ben !! :)

Other early starters on the day were Netsounds friends and favourites Cherri Fosphate.  Fucking brilliant – really enjoyed them.  No facking about!!  Good lads to boot.  Not shy with the beers and Jager either as I found when invited back to Cherri HQ ‘The Dugout’ up on the campsite for some cocktails and shivering !!  Cheers chaps and chapesses – it was much fun.  Any chance of a bloody t-shirt that fits my beer belly tho – medium is pushing the boundaries of reality  :).  A buddy in New Zealand has taken a shine to them so fingers crossed thanks to his radio host buddy the lads are recieving a little airplay daaaaarn there.

Open Swimmers Ben Talbot on main stage

Main Stage ‘Arena’ Note the blue sky – lovely !!

Now if you have landed here looking for a review of the music from Brew at the Bog thou shalt be disapointed – Im all about the photos and the craic.  Both of which I got in abundance out the road on the 5th as well as Brewdog beer.  Win, Win, Win situation and then there was the added bonus of the music. I couldnt do this peice without mention of the weather – the other major player in any Scottish Music Festival or outdoor event in general.  It was mental – 11 seasons in one day, sometimes one hour.  All the S’s – sun, snow and sand or grit to be more exact which whipped up a storm in the dustbowl between campsite and main stage.  Hailstones hailed for the  brilliant Bensh set, and although many headed for the goNORTH shed or Bothy when the inclement stuff reared its subzero head plenty remained outside to support whoever was treading the main stage boards.  Its a festival in Scotland for fucks sake – if you turned up in stilletoes and a wee chiffon number then you were in for trouble.  Thankfully Murray Netsound did see the error of his attire and made some adjustements early on  :).  Sure, there were plenty of T-shirts on the go but the majority had wrapped up for the day – the remainder just spent lots of time in the Bothy – the only heated venue on the day.

Bensh – The Austrian Welsh Connection

The Bothy – great wee bit.  Small stage set up in front of Bruces Accordian Museum – impressive in itself but a great backdrop for some fine acoustic singer/songwriter types as well as some indie-proto-punk-television-style musings (I made that up – I didnt see an awful lot in the Bothy other than locals Megan and Graham.  Just too much going on elsewhere for me and the lighting wasnt great for photos).  Megan Blyth put in an impressive (as ever) wee set which was witnessed by some major players such as Ally McCrae among others.  Surely its just a matter of time before fame and fortune land on the lassies doorstep and in a couple of years she can get the beers in.  Graham R Browns another young local with talent,  potential and some other stuff  just dripping off his bits (?).

G R Brown – dripping

Café Disco sounded good during their 5 song set in the Bothy.  The 4-peice of Clare, Fraser, Paul and Rachael previewed an as yet untitled song which has the provisional title of New Song – great titling in a titley sense – as far as titles for untitled songs go :) .  Also rans in their set were Start Again, What Do You Love, Persona and the brilliant Terra Nova.  Another one-to-watch Im reliably informed.  I bobbed in and out of the Bothy as the day progressed but cannot comment on any other acts – blaming Brewdog once more for that.

Café Disco from Glasgow

Ross Leighton of Fatherson

Fatherson or Endor on Main Stage – delete where applicable

I hadnt really paid much attention to Fatherson up until Brewbog but am now happily converted.  I enjoyed both their music and beers with their singer.  Good craic was had with Ross Leighton.  Pissed as a fart and a helluva guy – that goes for either of us !  Other main stage highlights at Brew were Woody Pines and Three Blind Wolves.  Go listen and find out more about them.  Woody Pines also managed a wee acoustic jam in the Artists Area which I caught on video – theres a link at the end for this and a few other videos from the day.  I will say these get increasingly shaky as the day and evening progress !

A Derek Guyler fan storms the stage (an obscure one there)

Dollface Debs

Just to the right of the audience area outside there lurked the ladies of Dollface, Laura and Debs (and special helper, Emily) and they in turn were next to the ladies of The Tea Posy, Julia and Sarah. Now Dollface do vintage clothing – none of which fitted me – I was gutted, GUTTED but  !!  The Tea Posy supply tea, cakes and lovely conversation. Both stalls/caravans were a welcome antidote to the normal market trader types you find at these festival thingys – so common.  I much prefer my Earl Gray served in the Tea Posy Caravan – civilised or wot ??

Julia and Sarah

Did I mention it was my daughters first Festival…….she was hacked off she had to go home and miss Stanley Odd

Matt Berninger of The National describes Peter ‘Beerjacket‘ Kelly as The New Elliot Smith – high praise indeed but well placed having watched his set. Tracks such as The Bar that Never Closes, Poor Captain of the Soul, Cave and Barricade were mesmerising. The next-big-thing ? Certainly one of them Im told by those in the know. There were quite a few of these at Brewbog – next big things and thems that knows !! Couple of days later I get an nice email from Peter regarding photos – neither of us completely remember our conversation on the day due to forces not of our ken (ok beer) but it would appear that I have passed my email address to an artist meaning that I have finally, successfully NETWORKED at an event. Hurrah etc !

Peter ‘Beerjacket’ Kelly and me just out of shot popping a business card in his pocket

At some point I found the Netsounds chappies hiding behind a sofa backstage trying to avoid me while creating a podcast. It wasnt pretty – after a beer and a half I tend to swear incessantly. Today Id had over two beers. It was carnage – major editing job for Murray and Jamie. Nae Luck Ya C**TS :-)

Me helping Netsounds pop casts

Monika Gromek of Quickbeam

Other mesmerising and spellbinding sets in the cooshed came from Quickbeam who completely stopped me in my tracks and Laki Mera who treated us to No Motion, More Than You, Fool, Winter, Pollok Park, Onion Machine and She’s a Day Later. Both Glasgow bands and both worth the watching – you heard it somewhere else first no doubt but Ill certainly keep an eye on them  :)

Laki Meras wonderfully named Laura Donnelly

Really wanted to see Findlay Napier but my ‘schedule’ had gone down the pan fairly early in the evening – too many people to blether bollocks to, beers to drink and then up against the might of over the wall and Stanley Odd I just didnt really make it out of the gonorth cowshed after about 930pm – I tried but it just wasnt going to happen – I had a Cherri Fosphate t-shirt which needed wearing on my head while I ran about like an idiot and that was the cowshed that required my ta;lents. T shirt far too small by the way chaps – hint hint etc. So sorry to Findlay and also to Washington Irving who I was also looking forward to. Managed a craic with some of the WI chaps earlier in the day but that was he stretch of my Irving exploits…….oh wait – there were the poor quality shaky vids though……I think they capture the final moments of the day and the nick of most people fairly well though !!

Now here are the other things I missed due to either beer, bad timing or just not giving a fuck about them.  In no particular order and my reasons shall remain private I missed Tommy Reilly, Hello Video, Midnight Kiwis in Glory Stuff, Little Fire, Matt Norris and the Moon, Sion Russell Jones and The Little Kicks.  Probably a couple more in there too  Things I saw but havent mentioned as yet (and wont now but there may be photos) are Open Swimmer, Open Day Rotation, Kobi and plenty more no doubt.  It was a long day and I finished it off pretty much a happy bloke, pissed, in the goNORTH hut !!  Over the Wall were superb – Gav and Ben know how to work a crowd and dont give a fuck when stuff breaks down !!  Two essential qualities in a two peice beat combo !!

And so to some McHipHop !! What can I say – I cannot lie when I say my two favourite bands on the Scottish scene at the moment both come from the same camp and they are Homework and the mighty Stanley Odd. Homework sadly didnt make the bill for Brew but will be appearing down at Dores for the village fete this year Rocksomething-or-other. Looking forward to that !  The Oddsquad fucking nailed it !!  Boom – right on the button for this dingaling here !!  Ten to One, The Oddyssey, SONARcotics, The Day I Went Deaf, Broken Has Morning, The Numbness and more – sooooo much more !!  I wrecked my knee, danced with people in bobble hats and Marc Wilson hugged me.  It was a set which can only be described as perfection.  Magic magic magic brilliant brilliant highlight of my day – am I giving off the Stanley Odd fan vibe yet ?
